Many write their name as "Jazz Band', but it's actually "jass" - the original form of jazz. "Jass" was a slang, possibly came from "jasm", which means spirity, energy and spunk. At around the same time, there were also jazz bands being formed in New York, and they spelled "jass" as "jazz" over there. Because the word itself is a slang, therefore different accents encourage different ways of spelling. Interestingly, people later on picked up "jazz" as the official name of the music genre. However, the meaning of jazz nowadays, is even wider and more complicated, comparing to the original meaning "spirity, energy and spunk". The Original Dixieland Jass Band came from New Orleans - the birth place of jazz music. If you see the word "Dixie" in a jazz band's name, you would know that they play in a traditional style.
